Full composition program
As a participant in the Full Composition Program, you will:
- have YOUR music played by our professional musicians in the festival’s evening concerts held at cultural and historical sites throughout Pavia. All concerts are professionally recorded and filmed, and portions of them may be broadcast nationally on Italian radio or via live-streaming video online
For the 2013 edition you can submit music for:
- string quartet with or without electronics
- clarinet ensemble solo to sextet, chosen from: 2 basset horns, 2 bass clarinets, 6 Bb/A clarinets, 3 piccolo clarinets, with or without electronics
- present YOUR music at the Composition Colloquium, a daily masterclass led by Prof. Christopher Theofanidis, Prof. Dmitri Tymoczko, and Prof. Amy Beth Kristen. You will receive a public composition lesson from one of them, and the other two will provide you with feedback on your music
- have private composition lessons with Prof. Christopher Theofanidis, Prof. Mario Garuti, Head of the Composition Department at Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, Prof. Dmitri Tymoczko, and Prof. Amy Beth Kristen. You will have private lessons with ALL of them, excluding the one who will give you a public lesson during your Composition Colloquiums
- attend daily lectures on composition, contemporary techniques, idiomatic writing, and advanced music theory by our guests of honor Louis Andriessen and Martin Bresnick, with special guest artists Monica Germino and Lisa Moore, and our faculty Christopher Theofanidis, Mario Garuti, Ingrid Pustijanac, Amy Beth Kirsten, and Artistic Director Giovanni Albini
- attend workshops by Prof. Ugo Nastrucci (“Modern Writing for Early Instruments”), Prof. Christopher Theofanidis (“The Orchestration of Henri Dutilleux's 'Metaboles' (1965) for orchestra”), Prof. Dmitri Tymoczko (“Process, Improvisation and Technology”), and Prof. Amy Beth Kristen (“Navigating the Abyss: Composing After College”)
- be mentored by Prof. Marina Giovannini during the rehearsal of YOUR music. You may be contacted by our professional players before the festival via email or Skype for a first reading of the score together
- be a member of the highSCORE New Music Center, and join one of the biggest international networks of contemporary music, accessing new opportunities, commissions, collaboration and performances. An interview with you led by musicologist in residence, Prof. Ingrid Pustijanac, will be published in the highSCORE Proceedings 2013, and your biographical information will appear in our database. Selected composers will also have the opportunity to be published on the next highSCORE Album (physical CDs and iTunes)
- enter the highSCORE Prize 2013: the best composer will come back in 2014 FOR FREE!
You will also have access to:
- daily Italian lessons
- an outstanding workshop on Italian cooking
- a guided tour of the city of Pavia
The tuition for the Full Composition Program is 1,299 euros.
Tuition includes full accommodation in a shared room on the university campus from 15 to 27 July. Each apartment is equipped with kitchen, bathroom, air conditioning, and wireless internet connection. The facility also includes a study room, a launderette, and a bicycle parking area. You will also have access to the newly built fitness center, beauty SPA, covered and open air pools, and cafeteria.
A roommate will be assigned to each participant, unless preference for a specific roommate is otherwise stated. A free transportation pass for city buses will be provided to every participant. Our English speaking staff is available 24 hours a day.
Not covered in tuition is airfare, passport fees, transportation to/from the festival, meals, laundry, phone charges, activities/entertainment during free periods, supplementary maid service, any insurance, etc.

Light composition program
As a participant in the Light Composition Program, you will:
- audit the Composition Colloquium, a daily masterclass led by Prof. Christopher Theofanidis, Prof. Dmitri Tymoczko, and Prof. Amy Beth Kristen
- attend daily lectures on composition, contemporary techniques, idiomatic writing, advanced music theory, and modern writing for ancient instruments given by our guests of honor Louis Andriessen and Martin Bresnick, with special guest artists Monica Germino and Lisa Moore, and our faculty Christopher Theofanidis, Mario Garuti, Ingrid Pustijanac, Amy Beth Kirsten, and Artistic Director Giovanni Albini
